I look at overtourism in Dubrovnik from a “realist but responsible” angle: people will keep coming, so the question is how to reduce harm and improve the experience.
In my Dubrovnik pieces, I:
- Encourage off‑peak travel and crowd‑aware timing (checking cruise schedules, using the city’s crowd monitor, visiting early morning or evenings)
- Recommend staying longer and in local, small‑scale accommodation rather than contributing to the flood of day‑trippers
- Suggest venturing off the main sights (like skipping or timing the city walls, using free or cheap viewpoints, taking boats, kayaking, exploring other Dalmatian towns)
- Emphasise respect for locals and place (behaviour, noise, dress, not treating the Old Town as a theme park)
- Even raise the option to not visit at all and consider less crowded alternatives along the Dalmatian coast
