For aspiring photographers, Scott recommends building a simple but solid kit around a mirrorless camera, a few versatile lenses, and dependable support + software.

  1. Camera brands to start with: Nikon, Canon, or Fujifilm (Scott currently uses Nikon Z7II, Zf, and Z6).
  2. Lenses: something like a 16–35mm for landscapes, a 50mm f/1.8 for portraits, and a versatile zoom such as 28–75mm. Scott’s own kit includes 16–30 f/4, 24–70 f/4, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, and a 35–150mm.
  3. Tripods: Really Right Stuff, 3 Legged Thing, Benro, or Manfrotto.
  4. Lighting: Godox AD600 Pro now, with plans to move to Westcott FJ-series strobes.
  5. Editing: Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop (or Affinity Photo / Capture One as alternatives).
  6. Cloud and portfolio: Google Drive / Dropbox / iCloud, plus a WordPress website or Pic-Time for showcasing work and client galleries.
  7. Workflow help: Imagen for faster culling, editing, and backups.

What kind of photography are you most interested in—portraits, landscapes, or something else?
